Few cities have an official drink, but quirky Austin – home to the largest urban bat colony in the world – stakes claim to the “Batini,” concocted in 2005 by the Four Seasons Hotel Austin to win the city’s Official Drink of Austin contest. Barbeque, bold and ubiquitous, ranks as king here, followed by Tex-Mex as a hot, spicy queen. Yet during the past decade, this Texas capital’s culinary scene has evolved with innovative nuevo Southwestern food styles to embellish often irreverent menus touting items like Rattlesnake Cakes. Add to that an abundance of outposts for Italian, Cajun, steak and seafood, plus an assortment of ethnic eateries.
